Multi-Cloud Object Storage Access

🗂️ Xloud XAVS – Multi-Cloud Object Storage Access

1. 🔎 Introduction

Xloud XAVS Multi-Cloud Object Storage Access enables users to interact with all major object storage providers directly from within their OpenStack tenant environment. By simply launching a VM, customers can browse, upload, download, and delete files from buckets hosted on:

  • Amazon S3
  • Azure Blob Storage
  • Google Cloud Storage
  • Dell EMC ECS
  • OpenStack Swift
  • Ceph RGW and other S3-compatible services

This solution eliminates the need for external plugins or complex setups, empowering users to unify their storage operations across cloud platforms.

2. 🧱 Architecture Overview

🔹 High-Level Workflow

  1. Tenant VM Deployed → User launches a VM within their OpenStack project.
  2. Pre-configured Tools Available → Tools such as Rclone, S3 CLI, or SDKs are available within the VM or can be installed easily.
  3. User Supplies Credentials → Users configure access credentials for their preferred object storage providers inside the VM.
  4. Direct Access to Buckets → The VM communicates securely with external object storage via native APIs (S3, Swift, Azure, GCS).
  5. File Operations Executed → Users perform file operations (browse/upload/download/delete) via CLI or mounted buckets.

📌 No additional integration is required from the platform side—this is a tenant-level, self-service capability.

3. ✨ Key Features

  • 🔄 Full Object Lifecycle Support: Browse, upload, download, and delete files.
  • 🌐 Multi-Cloud Compatibility: Works with AWS, Azure, GCP, ECS, Swift, and any S3-compatible system.
  • 🔐 Secure Access: Credentials are tenant-controlled; communication uses HTTPS and standard cloud authentication.
  • ⚙️ Mountable Buckets: Optionally mount buckets as file systems inside the VM.
  • 🚀 Instant Activation: Available to any project with no additional admin overhead.

4. 🧰 Use Cases

Use CaseDescription
Backup TargetStore backups of VMs, databases, or applications in cloud object storage.
Archive StorageOffload logs, system images, and audit files to low-cost storage tiers.
Deployment RepositoryHost cloud-init scripts, ISO images, and automation payloads in buckets.
CI/CD ArtifactsIntegrate with build pipelines to push/pull artifacts from buckets.
Cross-Cloud Storage AccessMove files easily between OpenStack and public cloud services.

5. 🔗 Integration Highlights

  • Tenant-Scoped: No centralized configuration needed; customers operate within their own VM environment.

  • Supports Native APIs: S3, Swift, Azure REST, and GCP APIs are supported out of the box.

  • Works with Existing Cloud Accounts: Customers bring their own storage credentials.

  • CLI Tools Pre-supported:

    • rclone
    • awscli
    • azcopy
    • gsutil
    • swiftclient

6. 🤖 Automation and Operational Fit

  • Automation-Ready: Easily script file transfers via CLI or automation frameworks (Ansible, Terraform).
  • Cloud-Init Compatible: Configure storage access at VM boot.
  • CI/CD Integration: Use for automated builds, deployments, and log archival.
  • Mountable Access: Use rclone mount or s3fs to mount storage buckets for seamless in-VM usage.
